Imagine for a minute the mood YOU would be in if you spent 8 hours or more alone with NO one to interact with...nothing to do but sleep and entertain yourself. Most people would be stir crazy and depressed. It's no different with your pet. They need to be around people. Any extended time alone can leave them feeling abandoned and unloved as well as depressed. If you work an 8 hour day, your loving pet sits alone 10 hours or more waiting to see you.
Sure they are happy and jumping for joy when you walk in the door, but for many previous hours they were most likely feeling alone, depressed and deserted. Older dogs will cope by sleeping the hours away, gaining weight, losing muscle mass, and probably suffer more joint and health problems. Younger dogs and puppies will have trouble sleeping the hours away and will do what ever they can to burn the energy off in their growing bodies in ways that can be destructive to your home. We believe, as do most vets, that a confined puppy will grow into a lazy dog with lack of energy; weight, health and joint problems; and will have more behavior problems. Not a good situation for your pet or you.
